<s:content>1 handango.com dislikes MIDlets? {anchor:handango.com dislikes MIDlets?}
The new layout for handango.com is live. While the new look is great there's something I don't like about the makeover.

All phone models which "only" support MIDlets to be installed. (e.g. all Nokia Series 40 devices) are removed and even for the Symbian devices there's no way to find any MIDlets. (But they are still there. I tried it with my own midlets. You can get 'em if you know the product id. Fortunately my midlets are still listed at http://www.my-symbian.com )

That's very sad.

It might be because the midlets didn't generate enough revenue. But on the other hand - does a user really care if a mobile application is written in C++ or Java ME? The average quality of the midlets found at handango was ... not so well but there's even Symbian stuff that's quite useless.

Now I could package my JARs inside SIS installers and reupload 'em or I have to search a new download portal for my midlets.

Maybe I try both ways ...

The main problem could be the payment process. People using Series 40 and alike phones often are youngsters without a credit card (or people without a need for mobile software) so payment methods like credit card and/or PayPal are useless.

The only solution could be Premium SMS billing. But there are only a few services which do exactly what I need and most of them seem to be dubios in one way or another. If I find one that's okay I'll let you know ...

On the other side it's pretty dumb trying to sell the suff on your own site as far as I can tell you. You just need the traffic of the big download portals. (Which don't handle Premium SMS payments and might dislike your Java apps ....).

We'll see.
</s:content>
