Sony Ericsson Application Shop to focus on Symbian OS applications

For developers currently distributing applications through the Sony Ericsson Application Shop, April 1 will bring some important changes. >From this date forward, the Application Shop will only sell applications for Symbian OS smartphones. The current Java content will be moved to a Handango-branded site accessible from the Sony Ericsson Fun & Downloads portal. This will benefit both Symbian OS and Java developers by making it clearer where consumers can find applications for a specific phone.

So what does this mean? I think SE don't have an idea of the power of J2ME. The "Fun & Downloads" thing shows that they think of MIDlets like they think of ringtones and wallpapers. (They think it's the same crap like Mophun).

Will MIDlets ever become first class citizens in Symbian land? Technically there should be no problem to integrate them tighter and the new APIs show the way. Last not least the new security features in Symbian OS 9 will be good for us J2ME developers since the native applications will show the same kind of warnings if they try to use SMS and data services. (Which is a good thing in general but it drives the user crazy.)

The SE guys seem to be complete morons.
